Artists and scientists have long stacked thin slices of an object set in glass to depict a three-dimensional whole. Drawing inspiration from holography, or the science of holograms, S E T U P’s work is a generative three-dimensional video displayed through stacked LED meshes.
Layers plays with our innate ability to construct depth from fragments, intuiting true three-dimensional movement in a manner similar to how one would perceive a true hologram. In the darkness, the human mind combines the individual slices of Layers into a comprehensive whole, blurring the boundary between perception and imagination.
This gallery is also the club room of Art Club, where DJs will be able to operate Layers and experiment with new ways of engaging audiences through hypnotic visual content.
Thus, Layers is both a standalone artwork and a contemporary instrument that can be played by Art Club’s invited musicians.
