Boris Acket’s Aesthetics of Decay, part of the Einder series (meaning “horizon” in Dutch), embodies a closed loop of creation and destruction.

Each instance of damage caused by the folding of the fabric creates a soft crackling sound, imbuing the installation with an unsettling atmosphere of decay. The winches that delicately lift and drop the polymer-based fabric cast waves of dappled light evoking an inverted surface of water.

As the material phases between transparent and opaque, more details emerge in the resultant projections. The constant hum of these motorized winches reveal the mechanical nature behind what seems like a natural and poetic refractive effect.

During its 12-month exhibition at Art Club, the polymer fabric slowly decays, being repurposed into new artworks upon deinstallation.

Boris Acket

Boris Acket (1988), a contemporary Dutch artist and composer, works with sound, light, and motion in exploring the interplay between control of and surrender to nature and reality. While his artistic practice was originally rooted in electronic music and club culture, Acket has evolved to challenge the boundaries between art, music, and performance space, thoughtfully blurring the distinction between art gallery and club experiences. His recent shift towards recontextualizing nature in art spaces was influenced by encounters with acoustic ecologist Gordon Hempton and sociologist Riyan van den Born in 2020.
